What Kind of Deal Is 10-10-987?

The recent 10-10-987 advertisements are brought to you by the same people that bring you 10-10-220; Telecom*USA.

Is the 10-10-987 dial around service any better than than their 10-10-220 service?

Compare Long Distance Rates

Their 10-10-987 program boast a low 3¢ per minute with a 53¢ connect fee. Having a connect fee means that you are charged 53¢ just to connect the call (even if it's just to leave a message on an answering machine) and then 3 cents a minute after that.

Review Table A and you will see that for a 30 minute call the effective cost per minute is not 3¢ per minute but 4¢ per minute. Compare that to CogniState at a True 2.7¢ per minute.

Follow the 10-10-987 math here:

A one time connect fee of $0.53 plus 3¢ per minute divided by the total duration of the call will give you your average cost per minute.

((Total Number of Minutes X .03) + (.53 connect fee) / call duration) = Ave cost/min

As you can see by the results in Table A , the 10-10-987 program is more cost effective for the average consumer than 10-10-220.

However, compare 10-10-987 to other national programs such as CogniPhone where there is also no monthly fees, and average cost is actually 3.89 cents per minute and you do not have to dial any 10-10 numbers.

You should also compare 10-10-987 to using a service such as OPEX at just 2.9 cents per minute for any duration of call or Unitel where all calls can be just 1.64¢ per minute in some areas. Even AT&T can give you a flat rate of just 7 cents per minute for any duration of call.

If you have a cable modem, the deals can be even better with Packet8. Unlimited local and long distance calls for $19.95 per month.

Will 10-10-987 save you money? Yes, if compared to 10-10-220 or if you talk a very long time per call. But in our opinion, both Telecom*USA programs fall short of saving the consumer any money at all when compared with CogniWorld at 3.49 cents per minute without having to dial a 10-10 number and no connect fees as well as other similar national programs.
