  Search Engines

Part 4 of an 8 part guide to driving traffic to your web site

Part 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

One of the most important things you can ever do for your website is to get listed in the major search engines.

bullet Google
bullet MSN
bullet Yahoo

There are of course many others but these are the big ones.

Google has been the 800 pound gorilla of search engines for quite some time.   Although it still remains the most important search engine to be listed in, MSN and Yahoo are actively working to knock it off the hill.

There are two philosophies about search engine placement.

  1. Organic placement.   The search engines find you naturally by following links from other web site to you.

  1. Submitted Free or Paid Placement.   Where you submit your website to the search engine and wait for them to index you or pay them to index you sooner.

Yahoo charges $299 for "Express Inclusion" that guarantees your website will be reviewed within 7 days.  Notice that it does not guarantee your site will be listed.  Just reviewed.

We believe that the best method is to use a combination of Organic and Submitted inclusion.   This means we suggest having links placed to your site from other sites and submitting your site to search engines.

So we suggest the following:

bulletWork with other webmasters to exchange links or better yet place "one way" links to your website.   If you have internal pages you want indexed sooner than later, have the other sites link to your internal page rather than your home page.

bulletCreate a site map.   A single page that links to all your other pages.   From your home page link to it.  This way when the search engines review your site, they will find your pages within 2 steps of your home page.

bulletSubmit your site to search engines once a month.  Not more.   Submitting too often can be interpreted as SP@MMING.   There are of course many other search engines other than the big three and although traffic is limited, each hit can be valuable.   So we suggest submitting to as many engines as possible

Of course be sure to read our section on link exchanges.

www.LDFacts.com has a free monthly search engine submission service that you can read about here.

Important Note

When submitting to the search engines, you will want to have a unique email address used only for this purpose.   You will receive a ton of spam in this email box so it is better not to clutter up the email address you use for everyday business.
