Internet TelephonyVoIP
IP Telephony Voice Quality IssuesThe voice quality of all internet telephony providers is improving. You may find that while on a call you will experience "Clipping" where parts of the voice has dropped out or perhaps you may find that there is a delay in the conversation. These issues are the result of packet loss or delay not directly related to the Internet Telephony provider but a result of the speed of:
In other words, your Internet Telephony provider has no control over the quality of your voice call. In general, however, you should expect at least a very good "Cell Phone Quality". This may be perfectly acceptable and well worth the savings you will receive.
Emergency 911 Concerns
911 should also be a concern. In an emergency, you should know that if you dial 911 from your broadband telephone, Emergency Services will know which address to respond to. Not every broadband telephone service offers this and for those that do, it may not be available in every area. Packet8 is one of the services that offers E911 Emergency Service. There is a small extra charge for the service, but this will help ensure your safety in case of an emergency. So if your broadband telephone is going to be your primary residential or office telephone, be sure to read and understand the E911 options.
